There is free camping and meals at the race venue for volunteers so bear that in mind if you aren’t local and would like to make a weekend of it! No need to book or let us know, just come along and follow the signs/marshals and once settled in come to our race stores.
IF you are coming to the race venue to check in first, then our race stores area is the place you need to go to - this is the marquee in the campervan field, ‘behind’ the rugby clubhouse. what3words location You can also just go straight to the checkpoint location at the planned time and don’t necessarily NEED to come to the venue first!
Fittleworth CP
Is at Tripp Hill Farm, on the B2138 just south of Fittleworth Village and is 45 mins drive from the race venue.

The checkpoint is in the large field opposite ‘Sofas & Stuff’. This field is owned by the lovely family (Kelly & Jane) that live in the end cottage nearest the fields to the left of the sofa shop - please park and treat it respectfully and if the grass is only mown enough for the checkpoint be aware of not flattening the grass elsewhere as it is needed for silage; there is another car park you can use to not take any excess vehicles into the field.
The idea of the checkpoint / route is that runners enter via the first (main/double) gate, run through CP and exit via the next gate along hedge to re-join the track. If possible, set the checkpoint up parallel to the hedge, about 3-4m away from it so it naturally ‘funnels’ everyone down towards the exit gate (obvs dependant on grass…). There should be some spare signs in CP supplies to ziptie onto gate etc to show exit etc please.
Aim to arrive at CP to set up for 7.30am please
The CP supplies & equipment should arrive around 7.30 am too
IF POSSIBLE aim to have a CP Crew member at the road entrance to Tripp Hill Farm to catch runners on the road and act as a visibility help for motorists
Also, it is IMPORTANT to have a crew member (or TWO!) outside the field gate entrance to catch runners so they don’t miss the checkpoint - this can be good to have the timing station here as well. They’ll need to be vocal and ‘on it’ please!
1st runner should be from 8.50 am onwards
We are able to re-fill water containers via the hose in the last cottage nearest the fields (fill them 3/4 full as they are heavy…!)
If you have a mini portable speaker and i-pod / phone you can play any music through then feel free to bring it for the checkpoint
RETIRING RUNNERS
Collect their timing dibber from them and keep safe as we need them back!
Call through via contacts sheet to organise pick up for them if they ned it
TEXT Gordon with their race number telling him they’ve dropped out - IMPORTANT - we need to know their whereabouts / status in the event
CUT OFF at Fittleworth checkpoint is 5 pm - participants need to LEAVE the CP by this time
Last runner to reach the CP can sometimes be after this time - you can use the timing link on the results page to see how many more runners are left to come to the CP
Event Crew T-shirts, Hi Viz & Event contacts sheet are in the CP supplies that are brought out to you. If you need re-supply, have queries or emergencies the phone numbers you need are on there.
The race uses the PURPLE ‘Tail’ permanent way-markers for the Trail, and runners come to the CP from the road, enter via the first big field gate, access the CP and then run along the edge of the field and out the second field gate nearer the cottages.
Plus, don’t forget - we like to give our helpers FREE ENTRY to next years race! If you would like to run in next years Serpent Trail then email Tom ( tom@freedom-racing.co.uk ) and we can get you added to a race as thanks for your help in coming to be part of the event and encouraging and looking after all the runners so well! :-)
